For some autistic people, anxiety can amplify what others may barely notice.

A change in routine, an unfamiliar environment, a confusing social interaction, an unexpected sound or the anticipation of something going wrong may begin as a whisper of unease. Anxiety can turn up the volume until that whisper feels more like an alarm demanding immediate attention.

This does not mean that autistic people are overreacting. Their nervous system may be working hard to process sensory information, uncertainty, communication demands and expectations all at once. When that load becomes too great, anxiety can intensify rapidly and may contribute to withdrawal, Not every autistic person experiences significant anxiety, and autism should not be portrayed simply as a disorder of fear or distress. People with autism experience the world in enormously varied ways, with individual strengths, interests, communication styles and support needs.

"Anxiety turns whisper into alarms" is therefore not a definition of autism. It is a metaphor for an experience some with autism may recognize: when something seemingly small becomes impossible to tune out.

Sometimes the most helpful response is not to tell someone that there is nothing to worry about. It is to understand why their alarm is sounding, reduce unnecessary demands, provide predictability where possible, and give them the time and space they need to feel safe again

The alarm may be loud. Listen for what lies beneath it.
