Breakfast At The Edge Of Reason.
Number 3 in the Trilogy 0f Surrealism.
At first glance, this world is playful-an elephant defies gravity, breakfast orbits the heavens, and a waterfall escapes through
an impossible doorway. Yet beneath the color and absurdity lies a more serious question: what happens when the mind can
no longer rely upon the familiar rules oof reality?
This artwork is not intended to portray psychosis as colorful, whimsical or entertaining. Perceptual disturbances are often
frightening, disorienting and deeply traumatic for the person experiencing them. Instead, surreal imagery acts as a metaphor
for the outsider attempting to imagine a world in which certainty has been disrupted and the ordinary can no longer be trusted.
As the final work in the trilogy, Breakfast from the Edge of Reason brings us to the boundary between sense and disorder. It
asks us to look beyond unusual thoughts or behavior and recognize the human being trying to navigate an altered reality.
We may not share what another person sees, hears or believes-but we can meet their distress with compassion, preserve
their dignity and help them find their way back to safer ground.
