Desperation

Desperation particularly by the chronic pain and isolation of mental illness, is an extremely high risk state that often pushes individuals toward seeking immediate relief, regardless of the consequences. These feelings arise when one is at the absolute end of ones endurance. Self medication with prescription and illicit drugs, and alcohol are routinely utilized by mental health clients in distress to mask their symptoms and potentially find peace. Relief is temporary, if it occurs at all. The symptoms can, and often do intensify. In desperation for relief from overwhelming depressive thoughts or psychosis, awareness of a potential for suicide needs to be high in the consciousness of an individuals family, social circle and clinicians. Desperation leads to desperate measures.
